Getting Back on Track after a “Bad” Workout

99 times out of 100 I feel energized and better after a workout than before I started.  But occasionally we’ve all had the “bad” workout – you finish a workout and you just feel BLAH. You didn’t or couldn’t give it your all, you just felt like you were in a funk the whole time.  Here are some tips on how to re-group and get your workout “mojo” back!

  • Evaluate what time of day you are working out and what your energy level is. If you aren’t a morning person and your morning workouts suffer, maybe you need to think about changing your workout time.

  • Evaluate your nutrition. If you are “bonking” (hitting an energy wall) halfway through your workout, maybe you aren’t eating enough beforehard.

  • Evaluate your hydration. Not drinking enough water can effect the quality of your workouts.

  • Evaluate your supplementation.  I personally drink E&E before each workout because it gives me that energy boost at just the right time to allow me to push harder and burn more calories. More info on it is HERE.

  • If the reason is related to injury, stop and evaluate the severity. If you are unsure, talk to your doctor. Don’t push through a workout injured if it will make it worse.

  • If you realize mid-workout that you are having one of those “bad” workouts, try to at least get something out of it.

    • Alter the length of your workout

    • Switch to a different type of workout

    • Finish it at a reduced effort level (something is better than nothing)

    • If you absolutely have to stop, do so

  • Know that it’s OK! It’s just one day – and it happens.

  • BUT promise yourself you are going to give 100% the next workout.

    • Schedule your next workout (set yourself up for success by choosing a time of day where you have the most energy)

    • Plan your pre-workout meal & supplementation

    • Choose a workout that you enjoy to get you “outta the funk”!

I’ve had a few bad workouts and It’s usually because of one of those reasons you mentioned. After I figured out what went wrong the next day my workout was a whole lot better. The e&e pre-workout drink is great!!!

Thanks Ross! I find that the mental part is the toughest, you have to learn to shake it off and move on!

gosh this is so true, it is very easy to get frustrated and upset with yourself but hoping back on the saddle is the biggest key because you know if you give that 100% the next time you will feel amazing!
